Izumi's canon appearances

Ensemble Stars! is a mobile game wherein the player is a female second-year student transferring into the esteemed Yumenosaki Academy which used to be an all-boys school famous for creating popular idols until she came along as the first student enrolled in the producer course. Facing the fact that the school is not what it seems to be, the player decides to help a newbie unit who wanted to rebel against the school's corrupt unit system and change everything from here on out.

I have compiled links of everywhere Izumi has appeared in that has been translated so far, and I will also be relating canon instances in his personality section to elaborate his mindset further. Though if you do have any questions or if I need to make a more detailed history, please let me know.

CANON PERSONALITY:

Izumi, at first glance, is an aloof person. And not to mention downright arrogant and rude towards almost everyone. Sure he may have that knightly aura (he does belong in an idol unit named 'knights' after all), but that doesn't stop him from hurling rude remarks to pretty much anyone he meets. His underclassmen get the worst of it, since bullying them is actually stated to be one of his hobbies (fellow third-year Nazuna also gets affected, since he looks very young for his age). He's easily irritated and would complain that something is "so annoying" if it doesn't go his way, to the point of being a catchphrase of sorts for him (and is even one of his voiced lines in the game).

And Makoto... Poor, poor Makoto Yuuki. Izumi is absolutely enamored with him, a second-year who used to be a model before they entered Yumenosaki Academy. Izumi loves him like a little brother, but the way he expresses it is terrible and borderline stalker-y at best -- In Duel, in response to Makoto joking about Anzu calling him up to the roof to confess to him, Izumi explicitly states that he'll throw her off the roof, then Makoto, and then himself. And in WANTED!!!, he claimed that Makoto said "I love you, onii-chan" again like the good old days and even had a recording of it, but most of it's just synthesized sound patched together to sound like it, making his classmate, Chiaki Morisawa, think that Izumi's like a kidnapper. And that's just the tip of this creepy iceberg.

Speaking of kidnappers, Izumi did pull a stint like that in the main story. In order to win the DDD, a very important Live (an idol performance), he kidnapped Makoto and kept him prisoner in the locker room for days. However, even though his plan was thwarted by Makoto's idol unit, he was let off with only a temporary ban from idol activities, as seen in Sweets Pattissier. This does affect the standing of his unit, and while he was only the stand-in leader of knights until their real leader comes back, his leadership role was also stripped away after the kidnapping incident. And so he gets his just desserts.

Now that we've established that Izumi is a very unpleasant individual to be with, let's go deeper.

Despite hounding after Makoto like a crazed stalker, Izumi really does care about him. Since he's an only child, the brotherly relationship that developed between him and Makoto during their modeling days must have been very important to him. Makoto was a very important part of what kept Izumi in the modeling industry, and to Izumi, he was someone who was just like his own family. Unfortunately it involved into an obsession -- to be thought of being a big brother. Makoto isn't the only victim of this; Izumi also considers Yuta Aoi, one of the first-year twins, to be a liable replacement. That said, he can actually display actual big-bro moments, such as telling his youngest unitmate, Tsukasa Suou, that the latter should depend on his seniors more. Though it would weird his juniors out who only knew him as a creep or a bully.

Speaking of bullying, it's also his way of showing that he cares. In Phantom Thieves vs Detectives, Izumi explains that he has seen his loved ones break to the point that they are unable to go back to the way they used to be, and he didn't want this to happen to anyone else anymore. He thinks that by picking on them, they'd be able to learn to pick themselves back up and fight back. It's a weird kind of logic, but considering what he had to deal with in the past (with Makoto quitting modeling and the real unit leader, Leo, breaking down during the "war"), it's not hard to see where he's coming from.

Speaking of Leo, Izumi holds him in high regard despite calling him a stupid king. As mentioned, he was willing to take Leo's place as the decoy leader of knights until the latter comes back from his ~mysterious disappearance~. Although he was bitter that Leo ran away in the war's aftermath, Izumi still remains loyal and will continue to fight for him, just like a knight willing to do everything for his king.

So in summary, Izumi really does care for his peers! He just has a weird and/or harsh way of putting it. Which is why a lot of people have accused him of being a tsundere, to which he vehemently denies. They may not excuse his more deplorable actions, but they do explain his mannerisms, and those traits make Izumi Izumi.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Izumi is an idol first of all, so he's already trained how to sing and dance in front of large audiences. And even before that he used to be a model, and it's been mentioned in some of his stories that he's been in the industry for quite some time now, so he already knows how the ins and outs of it actually work.

His specialty is stated to be ballet, and he used to take lessons before and even taught some of the basics to a couple of units including his own for the school festival.

In addition, cooking is also in his field of expertise. Izumi is very meticulous about his body, only eating his own home cooking instead of eating outside. It's to the point that he'd rather drink water for lunch instead of indulging on cake that his unitmate had lovingly offered to him.

And lastly, he knows how to knit. Just goes to show that he has a mother-hen side of him when he's not being a huge creep.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Mizuki Sena
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:

Izumi in canon
Mizuki in Recolle

His hair is now jet-black instead of silver, but otherwise his ice-blue eyes remain the same. Also he's nearsighted and wears glasses now, but opts for contacts during his modeling work.

AU HISTORY:

Born to workaholic parents in Japan, Mizuki didn't often see them much growing up, as he's usually left in the care of babysitters and maids. He doesn't resent them though, but he did wish they were around more often. He was also a pretty normal kid but aside from his decent singing voice, he didn't stand out much.

He'd finally gotten his wish when his parents suddenly announced that they're moving to the States because they are needed by their company there. So Mizuki was whisked away without warning to Recolle at the mere age of fourteen.

Wanting to stand out more in Recolle, Mizuki started taking up more hobbies in high school. He joined the chess club out of pure boredom until he found the game actually enjoyable, and soon became its best player. Though there's this one girl who didn't know when to give up, and it ticks Mizuki off to the very end.

When he became a junior, he was randomly scouted by someone from newbie fashion magazine who found his icy eyes intriguing and of course he tried it out just for kicks. Turned out that he has the innate talent for modeling and soon became popular. This also boosted his ego a lot and soon became a lot more haughty and cold as a result.

At this point, Mizuki doesn't know what to do with the rest of his life. He could keep on modeling, but it's not like he LIKES doing it anyway. He does love singing more than he'd like to admit, but it was a well-kept secret until he decided that he's going to take up music in college. His parents, though very ignorant of their child's aspirations, are still very supportive of his endeavors, and lets him major in that. Although he finds his courses all right, he can't help but feel that he's destined for something bigger than this. Ah well, there's always modeling to fall back on just in case, but he still has his reservations.

Not that he'd ever admit this to anyone. He's perfect, dammit.

There are some little-known facts about Mizuki, including how he and his family moved to Recolle, USA because some of their relatives also live in the city as well. Mizuki himself is a quarter American, which makes him and Miles Edgeworth ([personal profile] mr_fancy_car) second cousins on his mother's side. He and Miles generally get along but because of how far apart they are in this family tree they aren't too close.

The kicker however lies with his uncle, Kei Shigaraki ([personal profile] livingimpaired); Mizuki's father who is also Kei's sibling belatedly told Mizuki that he has an uncle in the city this entire time but only told him recently because the family just doesn't have the time and luxury to properly introduce each other to Kei-san. Mizuki is more than a little cold towards Kei as a result despite the latter's hospitality, but it could be worse.

AU PERSONALITY:

Mizuki is still rather similar to Izumi - cold, arrogant, and full of himself when it comes to his abilities. Though there are still some notable changes in this AU this time around.

The biggest difference is the lack of Makoto in this life: without somebody to obsess over, Mizuki won't be able to show his annoyingly overbearing nature that much. He'd be a much more stable individual as a result, no longer looking for his beloved junior around and wants to be approached instead. He also won't be too harsh to his juniors this time around, though he'd still be sharp-tongued around them if they test his patience. He's pretty much a better older-brother figure than his canon counterpart this time around, actually telling them on what they did wrong instead of plainly insulting them.

Also his career choices - since he's an up-and-coming idol this time around instead of being in the industry for the longest time like in his canon, Mizuki would be more lax about his modeling activities, being able to consume sweets and eat outside instead of relying on his own cooking most of the time. He's also not an idol in this and actually doesn't get the appeal of that, thinking that it's just a waste of time since idols have a short shelf life instead of staying at a much more lucrative job. Even so, he's a lot more undecided about his future, only taking up music because he thinks that his singing voice is pretty okay and if that doesn't work out, he'll always have modeling to fall back on.

And lastly, while his parents are only mentioned once or twice in his canon, Mizuki rarely sees his parents around in Recolle, resulting in a very lonely childhood. While he claims that he's used to it, he can get pretty envious of people in complete families, which is why he actually wants to strive to become a better older-brother figure. It seems that it's a family trait because of how strict and aloof his family tree is, as shown in his relationship with his relatives in the city in general. * Only time will tell if his canon memories will ruin his chances of becoming a much better person than his idol self or not.
